Geof is the only genuine caring character in the play Essay

Geof is the only genuine caring character in the play the others are totally selfish and self centred. Discuss this statement. From the commence of the play we can see Jo is the main character, she is highly independent and self reliant this is obvious from one of the opening pages were Jos mum Helen states children owe their parents these minuscule attentions to which Jo replies with I dresst owe you a thing. This shows Jo sees her birth with her mother as strained, she feels she has brought herself up and not reliablely had her mother their to support her. She has learnt to rely on herself and not trust her mother. When Jo becomes great(predicate) with a black boy form the navy, who leaves her pregnant Jo reacts badly because she is so independent and employ to looking after(prenominal) herself. Geof (Jos aerial friend) offers her a shoulder to turn to and she turns on him Im not planning big plans for this baby or dreaming big dreams. You fuck what happens when you do thin gs homogeneous that. The baby will be born dead or daft She feels she has let herself d receive and been promiscuous, nonetheless the sailor boy was crack her nuptials and love before he left, she felt in a safe relationship and that was why she slept with him. But Jo just sees that shes made the aforementioned(prenominal) mistakes her mother made when she had her at a young age. Most expectant mothers dont turn in this negative attitude towards their unborn child however I feel its because she thinks she may let the child down like her mother let her down.Jimmy the black boy from the navy who got Jo pregnant gave the impression of a kind and genuine character who did honestly love Jo until he left. In my opinion he loved her and did intend to return for her just now got scared of the prejudice he would face if he did return. He said to Jo ab off her mother ascending out about their engagement Shell see a coloured boy. He obviously felt his race was going to be an issue in t heir relationship and how it was perceived and was worried about it. Jo however did endure Jimmy was in the navy and even said to him on one occasion I might as well be naughty mend Ive got the chance. Ill probably never see you again I know it. So I believe deep down Jo knew there was a chance she wouldnt be seeing him again. In my opinion Helen did love her little girl she just didnt know how to treat her, maybe it was because she had her at a young age? She seems to think she should treat her daughter like a friend, she even encourages her underage daughter to crisp You dont smell it, you drink it I think the only way Helen knew to make her daughter love her was the way she made men love her, by getting her drunk.Helen did want her daughter to make something of her life I feel. She encouraged her to draw, saying her drawings were very good Have you ever thought of going to a proper art nurture and getting proper training? But I think the main actor she wanted Jo to make som ething of herself was so she could sponge of her. Helen says to Jo When you climb up earning you can start moaning. In my opinion shes saying to Jo you make some money and get us somewhere nicer. Shes not taken the task upon herself to find her and her daughter somewhere nice to live shes going to wait for her daughter to did it for them. Not a typical loving mother and daughter relationship, Helen is reliant on her daughter Jo.Helen is in my opinion lazy with regard to her relationship with her daughter. She is constantly asking her daughter to do stuff around the house light up me that bottle Have we got any aspirins left Jo? Here is another(prenominal) example of Helen being reliant on her daughter. She also becomes strangely jealous of Jos gay friend Geof. She is constantly rude to him Oh shut up Geof Sling your hook I believe she is jealous of his strong bond with Jo. She feels jealous of their close relationship and doesnt like him around as she feels inadequate compared to him.Jo maintains through out the play that she wants to be rid of her mother as soon as I get a full-time job, Im leaving Helen and starting up with a room somewhere so for Helen to know theres someone in her life she wants there, that person being Geof it must make her feel less important. Even for Helen who shows no real care for her Jo to know that her own daughter feels like that must be difficult. I think part of her feels she should have a close loving relationship with Jo I just dont think she knows how to or more importantly can be bothered.Peter, Helens latest fling who becomes her husband comes across as a decent mixed bag of guy at first, however he is sleazy Helen you look utterly fantastic Got your blue garters on? He does turn nasty towards the end when their marriage isnt going so well Look at Helen, isnt she a game old bird? Worn out on the squash but shes still got a few good strokes left. and I dragged you out of the gutter once , If you want to go back there its all the same to me. The way he speaks down to Helen are reminiscent of his character, he believes himself to be above everyone else, better looking, better dressed, better educated, a real snob.Geof takes a mothering role in Jos life, which I dont think she always appreciates. Ill buy you one for Christmas. If you ask nice Ill buy you two. Ill stay here and clear this place up a bit and make you a proper meal. I think Jo genuinely likes having a figure to look after her but I think she finds it difficult sometimes as shes not used to it, shes used to fending for herself. Why dont you leave me alone? I think that all this shows that despite Jos though exterior she does want looking after and companionship, especially from her mother even though she denies it, as that is what Geof is doing for her, being a substitute mother.Geof , a single gay man was evicted from his flat by his landlady because she caught him with another man. In those days being a sexually active gay man was frow ned upon so he was probably quite ashamed about the reason for his eviction and that is why he tries to hide it from Jo. When she asks has your landlady thrown you out? Geof replies Dont be silly, but later tells her the truth. Geof also agrees to move in with Jo, winning on the responsibilities of looking after a Jo and her baby. Also when Jo tells him her baby will be black he is extremely accepting and doesnt seem to care. In my opinion this is due to the prejudice he has faced about being gay.Another time his kind and compassionate character is seen is when he tries to get Jo and Helen talking again despite Jo telling him exactly what her mother is like he still persists and tries to build bridges in their relationship with them and get Helen to help out with the baby. Your mother should know, do you have her address? When he meets Helen though he is struck by how rude and uncaring she is and sticks up for Jo telling Helen. If Id known you were going to bully her like this Id h ave never asked you to come Here he shows true loyalty for Jo by sticky up for her.In my opinion Geof is a very lonely young man he didnt seem to have any other friends also Jo in the play, other than young man he was found in his flat with but in his own words he didnt rattling know the guy . We cant really be sure of his past because the play doesnt mention it but I feel hes faced a lot of prejudice about his sexuality and perhaps that is why he so understands Jo. He doesnt seem to have any family, and I think he was trying to make Jo and the baby into a surrogate family for himself.I feel he was the nicest character in the curb but he did become quite irritating as he was too nice all of the time. All the other characters had floors and attributes that made them lovable or unlovable. Geof however, was just quite bland. Helen for instance was an interesting character because she was so unpredictable, she could have a new boyfriend at any moment, or get drunk and do something r idiculous. Goef on the other hand was predictable but provided the rock of the story. He was Mr. Reliable that Jo could turn to he wasnt an interesting character like Helen but was a vital part of the play.

Between Two Lamentations Essay

The threnody of Christ is one of the most ordinary subjects in the realm of Christian Art. It became extremely popular from the 11th century to the early 18th century, encompassing vast art completions from the Byzantine art period under the gallant era of art, to the Baroque period of the Renaissance. Numerous works have been created, centering on this one scene that is of great import, not only to the Christian community but to the art being itself. One of the most popular scenes in Christian history, the Lamentations showcases Jesus Christ, brought down after just having died on the cross. His mother Mary is shown often with Jesus in her arms weeping and grief the death of her son. Surrounding them are several other mourners, comprising of Christs friends and family. As it is also a popular issue in the life of Christ, it is also included in many depictions of the Life of Christ, a form of Christian art that serves as a narrative or an early form of sequential art that tells the story of Jesus Christ from his conception to his resurrection and ascension into Heaven. This led to many diverse artists coming up with diametrical versions of the scene. The numerous renditions of the same scene, scatte red ink from the 11th century to the 8th century, is a good way o gauge the development of art at a fixed period of time. One of the first few examples is a fresco in the Church of St. Panteleimon, a small Byzantine church in Macedonia. The picture was made by an anonymous artist, known only as Meister von Nerezi or skipper of Nerezi. The piece, Lamentation over the Dead Christ in the Church of St. Pantaleimon, was through in 1164 which was the bosom Byzantine period.During the time, Christian art revolved around a rigid set of rules which restricted many artistic ideas, and as the reach was that of the period of changes to the Byzantine style, the art for the Master of Nerezis Lamentation piece was something relatable to Maniera Byzantina (Lasareff 279) . Lamentation over the Dead Christ in the Church of St. Pantaleimon (1164) Obvious at bottom his work is the ability to evoke feelings of empathy and even sympathy from its beholders, perfectly capturing the essence of distress and boilers suit sadness of the scene. This despite the images adherence to the strict formal rules of Byzantine art.It also features a to a greater extent definitive sense of emotion as opposed to other works of the era which tended to keep a more solemn depiction of things. Also of note is the Master of Nerezis composition of the piece, having Mary hold Jesus tightly, arms wrapped around the asleep(predicate) body, while a disciple bends over to hold his stone-dead masters hand to his face. The resulting placement of subjects evokes a spatial setting that proves ceremonious and well thought-out. Giottos Lamentation on the other hand, is a fresco showcased at the Arena Chapel in Padua, and is one of the most popular Lamentation pieces created. It too de picts the mourning of Jesus Christ, portraying him laid on the ground right after dying from his crucifixion, surrounded by friends and family, with Mary at his side, mourning and expressing great sadness in their faces. Giotto di Bondone, or simply Giotto, as he is more widely known, was a famous artist in the late Middle ages who specialized in createing and architecture. His works attributed to his being considered one of the first artists whose works led to the eventual birth of the Italian Renaissance, the period which signaled the end of the Medieval ages and gave rise to Early Modern Europe. The Lamentation is one of the best examples of his work, which was famous for the fuller, more three-dimensional style of painting that would only become more bombastic in the Renaissance period, which wasnt to become popular until around century after Giotto. (Webmuseum 2010) The Lamentation (1305 1306) Dating bear out to around 1305 1306, Giottos work on theLamentation featured Chri st being held by Mary, Jesus Christs mother, at the head, and possibly Mary Magdalene at the feet as the woman is shown with red hair and Mary Magdalene is known to have washed Jesus feet.In terms of the paintings composition, Giotto foc utilise on the sad scene of mourning in the lower left area, having Jesus and Mary framed by the six other people who are seemingly spaced appropriately to bing the watchers attention to the Mother and Son. Surrounding them are disciples of the fallen savior, as well as hallowed saints all of them in mourning, effectively conveying the overall mood of sadness about the image. Immediately behind the gathered crowd is a scraggly rock mound its sharp, downward line leading to the images central point of Jesus and Mary.Above them are angels, flying around with sad, mourning, grieving faces, their figures notably foreshortened to denote a deeper, more three-dimensional feel to the piece. Looking back at the fresco done by the Master of Nerezi, the Ita lo-Byzantine style of art is still most obviously definitive in his work basically prostrate whilst combining elements of the Byzantine art style with those of the natural world, the Lamentation over the Dead Christ in the Church of St. Pantaleimon features a flat-looking image which is iconic in its nature.Done during the Comnene Dynasty of rule which lasted from 1025-1204, the Master of Nerezis Lamentation was timely as due to the Comnenans being staunch supporters of the arts, the general art direction went towards the depiction of emotions, with themes much(prenominal) as the Lamentation and the Virgin and Child being among the most popular of the day. Whereas Giottos work was done as a part of a series depicting the Life of Christ, which was part of the Arena Chapel whose interiors were decked with frescoes by Giotti. It was finished in 1306, during that time when the Byzantine style of art was still somewhat general among artists.Considering the relative gap between the cr eation of the cardinal Lamentation pieces, it isnt surprising to find that there is a huge difference between the two art styles used where one used a more traditional Byzantine style of flatness while the other utilized a more realistic and natural mode which was at the time, a style of the artists own but considering that at the time of Giottis work, the style used by the Master of Nerezi was still what was of standard, then it denotes a significant leap forward in the art medium. Both pieces being of the same topic which is the closing of Jesus Christ, the overall theme of sadness and mourning over a death is reflected effectively by means of expressing emotion on the faces of the characters as pictured by their frowns and sad eyes and faces. Their postures are also indicative of the plight they are going through in the image. Also common is the disciple bend in to meet his masters hand, hence the posture of bending over, creating a line that leads to the point within the imag e wherein Mary keeps her face close to the dead Christ. In the case of the Lamentation over the Dead Christ in the Church of St. Pantaleimon, despite being tied to the art style of the Byzantine time then which often featured religious pieces in symmetrical compositions, the image remains asymmetrical as is common in Lamentation pieces. Perhaps the study difference in terms of the subject matter for both images is that there are more characters in Giottos piece.Aside from Jesus friends family, and disciples who mourn by his side, in Giottos version, angels decked in bright colors are flying around above them, sobbing and weeping as well. In general, both paintings clearly get the message across to the beholders, and almost always evokes feelings of sadness and understanding from its onlookers as well. In summary, the analysis of the two paintings which are different renditions of two different artists on the same theme, gives a peek of what the development of art styles was at the time. From the Lamentation over the Dead Christ in the Church of St. Pantaleimon by the Master of Nerezi in 1164s Byzantine style of art, to the groundbreaking realism and classicism as well as the incorporation of three-dimensional elements in Giottos Lamentation, it shows that art, give care many other aspects of human culture and society, also develops at a rate that coincides with the development of humanity as a whole. Nora and Medea Essay

Medea, in Medea, and Nora, in A Dolls House, are both women who seem to suffer badly at the hands of their husbands in 2 male-dominated societies the former in ancient Greece, the latter in nineteenth century Norway. Each does something important for her husband involving personal sacrifice, for which she expects trusted treatment in return, but when this is not forthcoming, how do they react? Do they accept the roles of conventional wives, demure and weak? Or do they rebel and put up unconvention wholey?Medeas culture dictated that women had most no rights, and were regarded as little more than possessions we wee to buy a husband and what we buy is someone to lord it over our body. Although Noras culture allowed women more rights, they were still forbidden certain privileges for example, a wife cant borrow without her husbands consent. This shows the male dominated societies the two women lived in, and the inferior role the wife was expected to play.Medea was not, however, qui te the conventional female of her culture for she is described as, a lioness, not human, excited than Tyrrhenian Scylla. Her use of masculine language I would rather fight three epochs, suggests she is almost male despite existence a model wife of her cartridge clip I have borne you sons. Nora also acts bohemianly for her era, borrowing without her husbands consent, but is still a stereotypical wife in a sense, playing with her children and being her husbands inferior, a featherbrain and skylark. The sacrifices do by Medea for her husband Jason are considered evil arts in her society, and cause her banishment. It is interesting to note that Medea made those sacrifices because her pith was, smitten with love for Jason. She even lists them to Jason it was I who killed the sleepless serpent . . . . I betrayed my father and my home. . . . I killed King Pelias. The severity of her sacrifice would be abundant in any culture, but to be stateless represented a death sentence in the Ancient Greek world. It is discernable from the above that Medeas sacrifices were to protect Jasons life and destroy his enemies, which mirrors the society they lived in, as it revolved around war and violence.Noras sacrifices seem mediocre in comparison to Medeas, since they do not involve murder. It was I who moreoverd Torvalds life, is a simple statement, which gives the audience Noras motive for borrowing the money. Throughout the play, it is obvious that Nora loves Torvald, as she says, if anything as horrid as that were to happen, when Torvald jests about his demise. Nora borrowed the money to enable Torvald to go to Italy to recover his health, but she obviously did not wish to worry him she told him how nice it would be to have a holiday. Nora accepted the roll of the skylark, even though it was demeaning, to hide the truth from Torvald. This reflects her society too, because keeping up middle class appearances was essential. After all the sacrifices made by Medea, and when she has come to live . . . with her husband, Jason refuses to acknowledge anything she has done for him, and claims, that his only guardian on his travels . . . was Aphrodite, she alone. In this sense, Jason expects Medea to be a sacrificial lamb in their marriage, and to do his bidding without a thought of decent treatment or appreciation from him. He also becomes, the traitor who has betrayed her bed, by his marriage to the princess. He twists the facts of their lives to fashion the illusion that Medea is unjust in her expectations of him, and even goes so far as to say that it is for her possess good I did it to safeguard you.Furthermore, after Medeas heart is broken, she is dealt a cruel blow when Creon tells her, press your two sons and go, into exile. Because of her love for Jason, and the sacrifices she has made for him, she is hated and feared by men as she says, I am alone and stateless. Medeas path seems to make her a sacrificial lamb for Jason, since her situation is so hopeless plundered from a barbarian land, I have no mother, companion In Noras case, when Torvald finds out about the borrowed money, he does not appreciate what she has done for him either, and does not reassure her as she anticipated. He overwhelms her with his reaction, not even allowing her to verbalize you wretched woman what have you done? He insults her by saying she has, no religion, no morality, no sense of province. This is ironicbecause it is her love and sense of duty that compelled her to break the law and borrow money in order to save his life. He rages at her, forcing her to see the reality that he only cares about himself you destroy my happinessmy future. He even asks her, do you realize what you have done to me?When Krogstad returns the bond, Torvald displays his selfishness further, and shocks Nora by declaring, Im saved But he then insults her and demeans her ready by asserting that Noras feminine helplessness made her, twice as attractive to him. Throug hout this whole event Torvald exhibits his true self to Nora, astound her by being a manifestation of selfishness and cowardice. Nora had expected him to be willing to sacrifice himself for her, as she had been willing to do for him. The harsh reality, however, was that Torvald was fully intending to sacrifice her to save himself. Therefore, Medea and Nora both expect a certain treatment from their husbands, which they do not get. In Medeas case, Jason knew of her sacrifices, and refused to acknowledge them. Torvald did not know what Nora had done for him, but when the time came, he failed her in his reaction. In this, it is obvious that Torvald and Jason are very similar. Both wish to benefit from their wives sacrifices and refuse to commend them for their evident love. Their selfishness reflects the fact that in their several(prenominal) societies the men expected their wives to do their bidding. Jason is typically male in his reaction, accusing Medea of being sex-crazed. Torvald, likewise, is the typically middle class husband concerned only with his induce position, not his wifes. Both Nora and Medea, after realizing the true characters of their husbands, seem blatantly to refuse to accept their roles as conventional victims of male dominance, and react in their own ways. They behave against what was expected of them. Medeas reaction is not as astounding for an audience as Noras in my opinion, because Medea has a degree of blood starve and vengefulness about her, whereas Nora had been behaving like a good wifethroughout the whole play, so her reaction is more powerful.Because of Medeas character, she is, in my opinion, expected to take revenge on her husband let no one think me weak I am made of different stuff. Nora does the exact opposite. She does not set aside Torvald as an act of revenge, but does this for herself, as an act of self-discovery. This may again be linked to the societies the two women lived in. Medeas culture was very violent and warli ke, almost primitive, whereas Noras culture was not at all violent, and offered more opportunity for her to break free.Medea declares that she will, triumph over her enemies, and murders Creon and his daughter. The use of the words triumph and enemies is rather dim imagery, which reinforces her vengeful spirit and masculine language. The two murders come as no surprise as that has been Medeas method of treating her enemies. Her second bout of revenge authentically shocks readers, for infanticide is completely against maternal principles. She is willing to sacrifice her own sons to torture Jason, as she coldly decides that, Jason will never see alive again the sons he had by me.Noras reaction is more modern and feminist, as she resolves that her most sacred duty is the, duty to herself. She simply informs Torvald that she is leaving him and her children. Though this may not be so controversial today (at least in the West), in Noras culture, the familys reputation would suffer great ly, and her own reputation would be almost certainly lost.Through the sacrifices the two characters willingly make for their husbands, whom they love, the two women act conventionally. After they see their husbands in their true lights, they each react in their own unconventional ways, and refuse to play the role of victim often given to women. In this, at least, they revolt totally against the stereotypes enforced by their respective patriarchal societies two thousand years apart, and behave similarly to women in more modern egalitarian societies.

Neoclassical Age

The 18th coulomb is a distinguishing period in British lit. It is a timeline in which classical literary conventions in terms of the literary techniques in different genres are revived. After the Renaissancea period of exploration and expansivenesscame a reaction in the direction of order and restraint. Generally speaking, this reaction developed in France in the mid-seventeenth century and in England thirty years later and it dominated European literature until the last part of the eighteenth century. It is a period where counterfeiting and facades are very important in some ways the country was trying to act resembling the Interregnum and English civil wars had not happened, and there is both a willful suppression of the immediate past and a glorification of the more distant, classical ro valet pastwhich is why it is called the Neoclassical period. Neoclassical writers, such as Samuel Johnson, Moliere and Alexander pope, sought clear, precise language. They standardized spelling a nd grammar, shifted away from the complex metaphors employed by Shakespeare and simplified literary structures. Neoclassical writers often adopted a rigid view toward society. Although Renaissance writers were fascinated by rebels and the Romantics later idealized them, neoclassical writers felt up that the individual should conform to social norms. Although society was probably corrupt, individual views could not stand against the truths found in the consensus of society.Principals of Neoclassic Age in Alexander Popes essay on man There are many plans regarding literary criticism that are instantiated in the first part of Popes Essay the problem of bad writing and criticism, and the greater danger of the latter to the public the rarity of genius and taste in poets and critics respectively the impairing of the capacity of circumstantial judg ment by unsound education the causes for the multitude of literary critics (those who cant write, judge and the critics need to know the li mits of his genius, taste, and learning in the exercise of criticism. What is the al-Qaeda for literary composition and the practice of criticism? What provides the common ground and gives guidance for both? For Pope, the answer was found in a specific eighteenth century understanding of the honorific term and concept of NATURE. First follow Nature and your judgment frame By her just standard, which is pacify the same Unerring NATURE, still divinely bright,One clear, unchanged, and universal get, Life, force, beauty, must(prenominal) to all impart, At once the source, and end, and test of Art. (Lines 68-73) Nature is the ultimate authority (Williams 219) in Popes Essay, and is presented here as that canon or standard to which both with (creative poetic and literary expression) and critical judgment are to conform. Authors and critics are to write and to judge according to the clear, unchanged, and universal light just standards of inerrant Nature. In literature and criticism, Nat ure is all-significant as its source, as its aim, and as its test. Art is from Nature, unto Nature, and by Nature. But what, exactly, does Pope mean by this all-encompassing concept? Williams expresses the eighteenth-century, neo-classical understanding of this doctrine in these terms. Fundamental to neo-classical thought about Nature is the conception of a cosmos which, in its order and regularity and accord, reflects the order and harmony of the Divine Mind of its Creator. . . Man can perceive this order and rule in Nature because he has a rational soul made in the image of that Natures Creator. . . . In the view which prevails in the period Nature is the manifestation in the visible creation of the Order and Reason roll in the hay all things, a reflection of the medieval view that the likeness of God is imprinted in the very matter and organization of the universe (219-20). In concluding bug out One of his Essay, Pope is so taken with the natural goodness of the primeval autho rs that he has difficulty restraining himself in declaring their praise. The religious nature of their veneration is not unless transparent, but also significant literarily. Here in worship before a common altar, divisions and sects and quarrels in criticism are forgotten as men unite in a single congregation. The learned from all climes and ages bring . . . their incense to a common shrine . . . . Popes verse . . . rises in full response to the inspiration his age received from a glorious past, a past which was both an inspiration, and a reproach, to the present (Williams 229).Creation, fall, redemption this basic scriptural schema provides the paradigm for Alexander Popes An Essay on Criticism. Just as the focus of the biblical narrative is on the salvaging of a sin-wrecked creation, so the movement of Alexander Popes Essay on Criticism is toward the restoration of a fallen classical poetics for eighteenth century England. This parallel supplies centerfield and shape to the Essay s grand purpose and 13 design. And in both the Scriptures and in Pope, the goals of cosmic and poetic restoration are ones for which we can and must give thanks.Neoclassicism replaced the Renaissance view of man as an inherently good being capable of astounding intellectual growth by the image of man as a sinful and presumptuous creature with a limited intellectual capacity. Whereas the Renaissance had emphasized imagination and mysticism, Neoclasscisim emphasized order, reason, common sense, and conservatism. Thewidely utilise prose literary forms were the essay, the letter, the satire, the parody, the burlesque, and the moral fable andin poetry, themost renownverse form was the rhymed couplet.Popes heroic couplets are a prime example of this form. As reason should guide human individuals and societies, it should also direct artistic creation. Neoclassical art is not meant to seem a spontaneous outpouring of emotion or imagination. Emotion appears, of course but it is consciously controlled. A work of art should be logically organized and should advocate rational norms. The Misanthrope, for example, is focused on its case more consistently than are any of Shakespeares plays. Its hero and his society are judged according to their conformity or lack of conformity to Reason, and its ideal, voiced by Philinte, is the reasonable one of the golden mean. The cool rationality and control characteristic of neoclassical art fostered wit, equally evident in the regular couplets of Moliere and the balanced sentences of Austen. Sharp and brainy wit, produced within the clearly defined ideals of neoclassical art, and focused on people in their social context, make this perhaps the worlds greatest age of comedy and satire.
